Accelerated BSN Program

Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree

Have you ever thought about a career in nursing? Do you already have a bachelor's degree in another field?

If you answered "yes" to both questions, then the University of Mississippi School of Nursing's Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program is the right choice for you. The Accelerated BSN program is designed for individuals who have a bachelor's degree in another field and wish to change career paths in a short amount of time. This particular program takes 12 months to complete and includes a continuous three-semester curriculum. UMMC students not only participate in hands-on, multidisciplinary clinical training but also receive classroom instruction that effectively prepares them for successful careers as RNs in a variety of health care settings.

Mississippi's first accelerated BSN program

The nationally ranked University of Mississippi School of Nursing offers the state's first accelerated, second-degree BSN program - in two different, equally distinct learning environments. In Jackson, School of Nursing students receive an excellent educational experience on an academic health science campus, home to four major hospitals - University Hospital, Children's of Mississippi, Wallace Conerly Critical Care Hospital and Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants. In Oxford, students can continue their education at the state's flagship institution and access innumerable Ole Miss student resources - all while receiving the first-rate education that the University of Mississippi School of Nursing is best known for providing.

Upon completing the program, students graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), which grants the registered nurse license. The BSN program prepares students for entrance into graduate study at the master's-degree level.

The educational programs at the UMMC School of Nursing are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Certification and Licensure

The University of Mississippi School of Nursing's Accelerated BSN program, a program leading to licensure, satisfies the requirements set forth by the governing body in the State of Mississippi. Completion of the Accelerated BSN program also qualifies graduates to take the NCLEX-RN/National Council of State Boards of Nursing Examination. Please be advised that requirements for nursing licensure vary from state to state. The Accelerated BSN program has not made a determination on whether the degree meets the licensing requirements of states, territories or entities outside of Mississippi. If you are located (presently living) outside of the state of Mississippi and are interested in the program, please contact admissioncounselor@umc.edu immediately and UMMC will make every effort to make a determination of whether it meets licensure requirements for the state in which you are located.

Additionally, Mississippi is a Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) state. The Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) is an agreement between states that allows nurses to have one license but the ability to practice in other states that are part of the agreement. However, be advised that ultimately reciprocity of a Mississippi nursing or advanced practice nursing license is determined by individual states and entities. For more information related to how nursing reciprocity works, please visit www.ncsbn.org.
